Thomas Rösch zeichnet anhand originaler Dokumente die fast 50jährige Entstehungsgeschichte der einzelnen Entwürfe und Fassungen der Musik zu „Ein Sommernachtstraum“ nach, skizziert Orffs stilistische Entwicklung und umreißt seine künstlerischen Absichten im Bereich der Musik wie auch des Theaters. Der zweite Teil bietet eine Beschreibung und zugleich Deutung der endgültigen Fassung von 1964, fortschreitend von Szene zu Szene.

The Greek tragedies, Antigonae (1949), Oedipus der Tyrann (1959) and Prometheus (1968), are acknowledged to be Carl Orff´s principal works, providing a particularly clear illustration of the singularity of the so-called "Orff style". This is the first research undertaken with a view to describing and analysing the composition technique applied in these musical works. The study addresses the primary aspects of speech rhythmisation, tonal macrostructure, melodic form, as well as vocal and instrumental arrangements. The final chapter attempts to explain the intrinsic difference that is characteristic of this music, whereby the influence of both historical music forms and composition techniques and of non-European music plays a significant role. It is shown that Orff developed a method of composing that created the tightest musical cohesion possible, both immanent in the works and yet embracing them all, while at the same time focusing on interpretation of the linguistic and conceptual parameters set by Hölderlin and Aischylus.
